The Growth Pattern of Perilla frutescens Leaves in Hydroponics

Abstract

|
In hydroponic culture of Perilla frutescens Britton, the growth pattern of leaves was investigated by estimating the leaf weights using non-destructive methods. The rate of leaf growth was increased as the node position was up to the 5th node, but not in the upper position from the 5th node. The time between initiation of succesive leaves tends shorter at the higher node position. The growth pattern of leaves showed sigmoid growth curve. Leaf weight could be nondestructively estimated by leaf length × leaf width, between which it was estimated more significantly by the leaf width than by the leaf length.
